About Birmingham Airport
Birmingham Airport is located in Birmingham, which is in the West Midlands, England. Birmingham is the second largest city in the United Kingdom. Located just 5 miles from the city’s center, it’s brimming with history and loaded with things to do in and around the airport.
Birmingham Airport, originally known as Elmdon Airport, was opened by the Duchess of Kent on July 8th, 1939. The first actual flight to ever leave the airport was actually before the initial opening in May of 1939. After being in operation for a short while, the Government overtook control of the Airport, forcing it to become a training base for pilots and using the grounds as a flight school, and for flight testing. It was during this time that the Air Ministry decided to build two hard surface runways to finally replace the old grass runway system.
In July of 1946, the airport was reopened; however, it was still under the control of the British Government. Birmingham regained control of the airport from the government in 1960.
Since that time, Birmingham Airport has seen magnificent growth in all areas, from the building’s construction, to the overall size of the runways, and the amount of airlines it has taken on – a total of 27+ Airlines to date – and now flies to over 140 destinations worldwide. Some of the larger and more popular airlines which arrive and depart from Birmingham are United Airlines, Delta Airlines, Thomson Airways, and Lufthansa Airlines. Birmingham Airport is one of the largest employers in the region, with its thousands of Birmingham Airport jobs.
In 2013, there were 9.1 million passengers arriving and departing through the doors of Birmingham Airport.
From two original terminals, the airport has made some major changes and has downgraded to just one terminal, fielding all passengers on arriving and departing flights through just one terminal to alleviate stress and confusion. Also, the airport has a 400 metre runway expansion ongoing which is expected to be finished in the Spring of 2014. The Airport is owned and operated by Birmingham Airport Holdings.
