About East Midlands Airport

East Midlands Airport is a beautiful airport located in North West Leicestershire, at Castle Donington. The airport is situated on over 218 acres of landscape, and has become a favorite airport to fly with or to. As it stands currently, the airport ranks as #11 on the list of busiest and most popular airports in the United Kingdom. In 2013, there were over 4, 334, 117 passengers that arrived and departed through the doors of East Midlands. Known as EMA in airport code, there are over 140 destinations worldwide in which flights departing and arriving from EMA travels to.

East Midlands Airport was built circa 1940’s. The history behind the airspace is quite interesting. Originally, the airport was built as a royal airfield which then decommissioned in 1946. From there, local government from various entities had purchased the space for the purpose of using it for government operations. The airport was eventually opened for public use by the Duke of Edinburgh in 1965. Although much history has taken place since its initial opening, none of it is insignificant and it all deserves its due credit.

Since its inception, East Midlands Airport has had a wonderfully successful career and has seen tremendous growth and change over the past decades. In 2014, there are still improvements being made on this lovely airport, all for the benefit of bringing technology up to par on a competitive level. The Manchester Airports Group is the current owner of the facility. They also own 3 other major airports in the United Kingdom aside from East Midlands, such as Stansted Airport, Bournemouth Airport, and Manchester Airport. The airport accounts for thousands of East Midlands Airport jobs.
